Between Alpes-de-Haute Provence and the Plaine du Vaucluse, is the Mountain of Luberon divided into two mountain ranges – the Petit Luberon to the west and the Grand Luberon to the east.

LUBERON - Village
Here, Provence, shows its true character. In spite of an influx of tourists, the natural resources and cultural past have been protected: perched villages hiding chateaux and churches, low dry-stone walls, green forests and white chalk hills….

The Romans, around BC 45-30, founded Apt, the capital of Luberon. Reputed for its crystallized fruits and the production of lavender essence, this town is the ideal point of departure to discover the National Park of Luberon. Created in 1977 it

regroups 69 communes for the sole purpose of preserving the environment. Signposts help to make the public aware of how important it is to protect the cultural and natural patrimony of Luberon. Petit Luberon Bonnieux, the most important perched village of Petit Luberon, extends to the Cavalon valley dotted with cherries, olive trees and vines.

Approximately 8 km from Bonnieux, is Fort de Buoux, where the first rock drawings in Provence were found. Built on an immense rock, the architecture of the chapels, donjons, silos…is witness to its history. You will also have a magnificent panoramic view over Luberon. If you have time, take a botanical stroll along the small paths that traverse through the cedar forests planted in 1861. Lacoste is where the Marquis de Sade stayed in 1765 and 1766. The village has conserved beautiful traces of its medieval past.

Menerbes, built on the summit of a hill, has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It is witness to the dolmen of Pichouno, unique in Provence. Excavations unearthed traces of the Roman era. In the 16th century, Menerbes was the center of the Protestant movement. There is a beautiful citadel constructed between the 12th and 16th centuries. The old, elegant dwellings stand as evidence to a place once inhabited by the noblesse. Numerous painters such as Nicolas de Stael and Picasso worked and lived in this village. Oppede-Le-Vieux is a magnificent small village built on the summit of a rocky spur over-run by exuberant vegetation. If you wish to visit this village, abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century by its inhabitants who moved to the plains, leave your car at the foot of the village and go on foot.

The 12th century Collegiale. The ruins date from the Middle Ages and the paved paths and Renaissance facades of the dwellings are, for the most part, in ruin. Lourmarin is one of the lighthouse villages of Luberon. An animated pedestrian village filled with terrace cafes, restaurants, boutiques. Painters and water-colourists line its charming, narrow, small paved streets and shaded squares. Albert Camus, the Noble Prize Winner for Literature lived and wrote here. He is buried in the village cemetery.

Facing the village, on a butt, is the Chateau de Lourmarin dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Well worth a visit to see the curious staircases and magnificently furnished rooms. Cadenet situated 5 km from Lourmarin takes its name from Candelence. Up until 1978, wickerwork was a flowering industry. Traces of a feudal chateau remain from where you will have a panoramic view over Durance, Luberon, Saint-Victoire and the Alpilles. Visit the Musee de la Vannerie, which exhibits tool and wicker objects, and pay a visit to the troglodyte habitations. Cucuron is a splendid village situated at the foot of the Luberon Mountain. This is the country of the boatswain with the Saint-Victoire Mountain so dear to Cezanne, and the Alphilles de Daudet on the horizon. Here, agriculture dominates. More than 200 winegrowers produce "Cotes de Luberon", as well as cherries, fruits and olives. Ansouis, constructed as a fortress against the almighty mistral, dominates the Durance plain. This pretty village features a medieval chateau from the 12th century with a magnificent collection of furniture dating from the17th and 18th century as well as some beautiful tapestries. The French garden merits a look.

On the edge of the Vaucluse plateau are drystone houses which spiral, one after the other, around the rock to the summit, where a church and a chateau stand facing the Luberon hills. It is THE village of Luberon as many artists and starlets have decided to make their home here.

To see: The imposing fortified chateau in the center of the village, the richly decorated Saint Firmin Church and the Musee Pol Mara, a Flemish contemporary artist.

Two and a half kilometers from Gordes you will find the village of bories - houses built entirely from drystone. The origin of these bories goes back to Ligures. Up until 1839, they were inhabited by shepherds and peasants, after which the houses were abandoned. A must see is the Abbey of Senanque. Founded in 1148, the architecture of the building is authentic 12th century. To this day, the Abbey is run by the Cistercian monks who produce lavender essence, honey, and liqueur. In June and July the Abbey is almost hidden by flowering lavender and lush greenery – a spectacular vision in the heart of Vallon de la Senancole.

Roussillon. Situated in the heart of the most important ochre deposits in the world, this village owes its reputation to the impressive cliffs and ochre quarries. Roussillon is charming and picturesque: a labyrinth of small streets and squares, old buildings and churches. The tinted facades of the houses, which vary from clear yellow to flamboyant red, illustrate the result obtained from the ochre. A must visit is the Conservatoire of Applied Ochres and Pigments, which presents the fascinating history and production of ochre. The Sentier of Ocres will give you an idea of this unique and natural heritage of Roussillon.

Saturnin-les-Apt is charged with history. Situated about 9 km from Apt, this small, peaceful, market town clings to a rock guarded by two 17th century windmills and the ruins of a chateau. On your walks along the small streets in the center of the village, you will come across beautiful old houses, sculptured porches, and delicately worked doors and window frames. Other sights are the ruins of an 11th century chateau and chapel, windmills, ramparts, doors and towers from the 11th century.
