| It is also here that, at the beginning of the 15th century, the famous Marseille soap industry was created from the olive oil extracted from the olive trees in the surrounding countryside. Even though today the town is better known for the implantation of an airbase and flight school, it merits a detour as it has several advantages in its favour. TO SEE:
In the heart of the town stands the imposing Chateau de l’Emperi. Built on a rocky hill, it is the ancient residence of the bishops of Arles. A large part of the chateau was rebuilt in the 13th century.
The fountain in Place Crousillat is beautiful but completely covered by a mantle of moss.
To the north of the central town, the Collegiale St. Laurent, constructed at the beginning of 1344, houses the tomb of Nostradamus. Situated on rue Nostradamus is the house of Nostradamus where he wrote his famous prophecies – his intriguing book of spells continues to fascinate visitors. In the center of the town, the 13th century St. Michel church with its sculptured porch and bell is quite remarkable
SURROUNDINGS:
The Salonnaise countryside is dotted with a few small picturesque villages: Aurons, a lofty village with its St.Pierre des Canons abbey, and La Barben with a superb chateau and animal park. In the direction of l’étang de Berre le picturesque village of CORNILLON-CONFOUX which offers a nice view on the region. |
