| MARTIGUES is known as the Venice of Provence due to the canals uniting the districts of Martigues. This town has a rich history and a vast cultural inheritance. |
MARTIGUES TO SEE: The church of St. Genies dates from 1625. The statue on the façade is of Gerard Tenqu, a native of the country born in 1040 who founded the Hospitaliers de Malte. Don’t miss the Chapelle de l’Annonciade, the 17th century baroque St. Madeleine church, the gallo-roman Lapidaire Garden and the ‘Miroir aux Oiseaux’, which was a favourite spot for painters such as Corot, Delacroix, Loubon and Ziem. The Musee Ziem is installed in the ancient customs house and exhibits the |
works of this painter as well as others. This part of the quay is lined with fishermen’s houses with brightly coloured facades. L’Etang de Berre. At first sight there is nothing to see as it is disfigured by gigantic industrial infrastructures. However, there are some places worthy of the detour. Fos-Sur-Mer: Concealed behind the port installation zone you will rediscover the charm of an old Provencal village and a medieval fortress. Fos lives on the rhythm of traditions and proposes all year-round, outdoor Provencal and Camarguaise festivals, both cultural and traditional. |
