PAYS DES SORGUES - L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

Sorgues waters the entire valley between Mont Ventoux and the Luberon Mountains. From the source of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, to the Isle sur la Sorgue, these emerald green waters traverse the villages and transform them into veritable oases of verdure
L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, so called the Venice of Comtat.
Long ago it was built on piles and its inhabitants lived solely on fishing. Thanks to the number of waterways running through the town, the 17th century saw the arrival of cloth mills, followed by silk factories in the 18th century and a paper industry in the 19th century. The huge paddles are the last vestiges of this epoch. Today, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is internationally known, due to some 300 antique shops located in the town.

TO
SEE:
The 13th century Collegiale Notre Dame des Anges with its exceptional Baroque interior, the Pharmacie de l’Hopital with its original 18th century furnishings and pottery from Moustier, and the 18th century Hotel Donadei de Campredon, now a museum exhibiting famous painters such as Poliakoff, Dufy, Miro, and others.

Fontaine de Vaucluse takes its name from the region and its etymology, "Vallis Clausa", evokes a geographical curiosity. It is a very popular tourist spot mainly because of the impressive source that gushes out at the foot of a 230 meters high. cliff. One of the most powerful resurgence in the world, its unfathomed, emerald green waters is truly spectacular in autumn and springtime. This picturesque site has inspired numerous poets – the most famous being Petrarque, Rene Char and Frederic Mistral.

Not to be missed:

Overlooking the houses below, are the ruins of a chateau constructed in the year 1000. In the 14th century, it became the property of the Bishops of Cavaillon. Visit the Church of Notre-Dame de Saint, built along the lines of Roman architecture. The Ecomusee du Gouffre organises a guided tour into the depths of its abyss. Well worth a look is Le Moulin which, to this day, still produces "ancient paper".

Cavaillon is one of the entrances of Luberon, Apt and Isle sur la Sorgues. This town has a rich historic past, which you will discover as you stroll down the small streets of old Cavaillon. The richness of its soil is apparent at the country markets, which are full of colour and wafting perfumes. Do not forget the Saint-Veran Cathedral with its small 12th century Roman cloister and the 18th century Synagogue - one of the most beautiful in Europe.
