The Provencal part runs from the southern side of the Gorges du Verdon with its stunning landscapes and the Plateau de Valensole of lavender horizons, to the Pays de Forcalquier punctuated with medieval villages and the Vallee de la Durance abundant with fruit and vegetables in the west. These different territories constitute the tourist belt of the region.
Digne-les-Bains, is THE area of the Alpes-de-Haute Provence region due to the natural elements - pure air, exceptional water and a |
protected environment. A thermal health resort with known therapeutic virtues is nestled at the crossroads of three valleys. There is an impressive geological reserve spreading over 150,000 hectares. Digne-les-Bains is also proud to have welcomed the famous traveller, Alexandra David Neel, who dropped his baggage in this town in 1928 and built Samten Dzong, his "fortress of meditation".
TO SEE:
The 15th century Saint-Jerome Cathedral and the Notre-Dame-du-Bourg Cathedral dating between the 12th and 13th century. If you stroll through the Museum of the Haute Provence Geological Reserve, one of the three Museographical centers (the other two are Sisteron and Castellan) of the Haute Provence, you will understand why this region is so important. Installed on a bedrock of tuff a few kilometers from Digne, the museum synthesizes 300 million years of geological history. |
