| THE BLUE COST (COTE BLEUE) is picturesque and wild. It runs for 25km to the west of Marseille. |
Due to the arid and rocky Estaque mountain chain, which acts as a natural rampart, the coast has been preserved from massive urbanisation. The Blue cost is a series of creeks, beaches and small fishing ports. Peaceful with a certain familiar ambiance. It is perfectly understandable that its charm was not missed by Impressionists such as Cezanne, Dufy and Derain whose paintings made famous. TO SEE: Rove is a small village in the heart of the Estaque chain, famous for its goats’ cheese. |
The Calanques, each one wilder than the other and only some are accessible on foot: Niolon, La Vesse, Madraque de Gignac, La Redonne, Les Figuieres, Mejean, and Cary-le-Rouet "pearl of the Cote Bleue". This coastal resort was the place of residence of Fernandel, the French actor. Sausset-les-Pins is noted for its sandy coves and La Couronne reputed for its fine sandy beaches. Carro is a small bustling fishing port. |
