L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, so called the Venice of Comtat. Long ago it was built on piles and its inhabitants lived solely on fishing. Thanks to the number of waterways running through the town, the 17th century saw the arrival of cloth mills, followed by silk factories in the 18th century and a paper industry in the 19th century. The huge paddles are the last vestiges of this epoch. Today, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is internationally known, due to some 300 antique shops located in the town. TO |
