| Since the creation of Parc du Mercantour in 1979, it has become the most visited out of the seven national parks in France. The park spreads over 68,500 hectares and includes seven valleys, five of which are in the Alpes Maritimes. |
Numerous villages, often perched, are be found in this region. Most harbour important architectural treasures and many churches are decorated with frescos and primitive Nicois altarpieces. The park is planted with a rich flora of more than 2000 species of flowers, out of which 200 are extremely rare such as the Edelweiss, the Martagon Lily and the Saxifrage with multiple flowers which is the park’s symbol. Parc du Mercantour is the only European mountain range where you will find chamois, |
wild sheep, ibex, and wolves which have returned to their natural habitat from Italy where they are protected. Hidden within the dense forest are stags, roebucks, hares, wild boar and partridge. The park is also a paradise for bird watchers as one can observe many magnificent different species of birds of prey such as eagles, circaète, vultures, to name a few. In the middle of this incredible landscape lies hidden a marvellous sight which is classified as a historic monument. LA VALLEE DES MERVEILLES 37,500 cave drawings, most of which go back to the Bronze Age. Together, they constitute one of the richest treasures in Europe. |
