The city opens on to one of the most beautiful man-made bays in the Mediterranean, where, in the Mourillon district situated only a few minutes from the center of town, twenty hectares have been converted into beaches.. The old town has lost nothing of its typical Provencal atmosphere with the daily markets animating the streets. with a seating for 8500 spectators, and the Opera. It is also here that the famous actor, Raimu, (real name was Jules Muraire), was born. TO SEE: The ropemakers of Marine rope, conceived by Vauban, produce rope made to a length of 320 meters . Musee du Vieux Toulon installed in an ancient bishopric dating from 17th century where you will see an impressive collection of firebacks as well as souvenirs of old Toulon and its daily life. The Royal Tower, built at the beginning of the 16th century as a defense against invaders has walls seven meters deep. Once an old prison it is now the Naval Museum. SURROUNDINGS TAMARIS, an agreeable seaside resort nestled in the hills from where you will have a splendid view to the Saint Mandrier Island. Visit the Villa Tamaris Pacha, a magnificent Italian building, constructed by the Mayor of the epoch, Michel Pacha. Situated in a beautiful park the villa exhibits a collection of contemporary art. FORT BALAGUIER, where you will have spectacular views over Toulon and its bay. Also found there a naval museum with beautiful models of ships and paintings of the region, together with a few souvenirs from the Napoleonic era. The 17th century chapel houses objects and documents on the convicts and galleys. LE REVEST LES EAUX is a charming old village built on a rocky peak dominated by a Sarrasine war tower. In the heart of the village there is a 17th century chateau, converted into a guest-house. An ideal spot for walking along its numerous paths |
